The Green Spotlight:
Timber Creek Farms
Are you interested in changing some of your family's grocery purchases to ORGANICS?
I don't know any parent who doesn't want their children the reap the benefits of eating healthier foods. Choosing unprocessed, un-packaged, whole foods is one of the best things we can do for our family's health, but it can be time-consuming and expensive. Or so it seems. In the long run, buying fresh foods and buying in bulk can actually save us money. We pay (or over-pay!) for the convenience of pre-packaged foods and single servings. When I looked to switch some of my produce purchases to organics, I found that many grocery store prices were just too high to afford. I want fruits and vegetables that have been grown without the use of dangerous pesticides. I want to support small farmers who take great care with the quality of their soil. I want to be environmentally friendly; but I need to stick to my budget. I found a great solution a couple of summers ago: Timber Creek Farms, an organic foods co-op located in Yorkville, IL.
Timber Creek Farms has been delivering fresh, organic produce, Black Angus organic beef, free range organic chicken, deep ocean fish, organic dairy, bakery and grocery items to folks all over the Chicago area since 1988. Co-op members pay no fee to join and can order weekly, monthly, or sporadically - whatever suits their needs. TCF offers produce boxes ranging from the Fruit Box, Fruit & Vegetable Box, A Box Just For Me, Salad Fixin' Box, Makin' Baby's Food and Nursing Box. (Their box options are too many to list here.) They also deliver organic milk and hormone-free milk in plastic or glass bottles.
My kids loves getting our Fruit Box and seeing what's inside each week. Since we are a little more picky about our vegetables, we add our specific choices to our order along with our milk. TCF offers semi-custom and completely custom boxes as well. They even offer customers a way to get free shipping on every order. TCF has made it affordable and easy for me to offer my family some organic food each week. Did I mention they have outstanding customer service? The staff is so friendly.
I could not have made this change without TCF home delivery. I highly recommend this company and its yummy food! Give them a try at www.tcforganics.net.

Moms Say NO to BPA. Industry gears up for a fight.
In the last couple of years, moms and dads across the U.S. have stood up to manufacturers and the government to demand the removal of bisphenol-A, or BPA, from children's products, like baby bottles, sippy cups, dishes and toys. Our voices have been heard and many companies have removed or have begun removing this toxic chemical. BPA has been used to strenghten plastic since the '50s, but science is now seeing clear evidence that BPA is linked to breast cancer, testicular cancer, diabetes, obesity, miscarriage and other reproductive problems in animals. In recent studies on human data, BPA is linked to diabetes and heart disease. We have made a huge step in lobbying manufacturers to remove this ingredient from our baby's products. However, we are all exposed to BPA whenwe use canned beverages and foods - veggies, fruits, soups, and even baby formula. Some statesand possible the U.S. government are considering a ban on BPA in these products as well. This move has the canned beverage and food industry worried and gearing up for a fight. The Washington Post ran an article on Sunday, May 31, 2009, based on notes obtained from the lobbyist groups representing this industry. Click here to read what plans they have to try to sway public opinion and convince U.S. parents that BPA is safe to use. We need to be ready to fight back. Help keep your family safe and healthy. Contact your Congressman or Senator and tell them you support a ban on BPA!
This is what scares me the most as a mom.
"Despite more than 100 published studies by government scientists and
university laboratories that have raised health concerns about the
chemical, the Food and Drug Administration has deemed it safe largely
because of two studies, both funded by a chemical industry trade group." - from Washington Post article, 5/31/2009
